Twenty years ago, Chrysler launched its first minivan,
and it hasn't looked back since. For 2004, a Platinum model
is offered with the Touring trim to celebrate two decades
of achievement. The special model has 16-inch chrome-clad
platinum finish wheels, two-tone leather seating, a rear-seat
DVD entertainment system, a six-disc CD/DVD changer, a rear
cargo organizer, chrome interior door handles, embroidered
platinum floormats, body-color cladding and Platinum Series
badging as standard equipment.
The Town & Country leads the way in terms of minivan
firsts. It has the industry's first power up and down liftgate,
the first removable, powered center console and a minivan-first
pop-up rear cargo organizer. Now that's innovation for you.
Available Models
The 2004 Chrysler Town & Country is offered in five
models: base, LX, eX, Touring and Limited. Base, LX and
eX models are covered in a separate review.
Interior Features
The Town & Country is a roomy and practical minivan.
While the third-row seat does not fold into the floor, there
is a split third-row bench seat with 55-lb portions that
remove, recline, or fold.
There are more firsts with the Town & Country, including
an industry-first first power sliding door obstacle detection
system for opening and closing.
Three new audio options are available. One, standard with
the top-line Limited model, is an AM/FM/CD/DVD/Navigation
system. It has a radio and a six-disc CD player with a GPS
DVD-based navigation system with full color and continuous
update map display.
Exterior Features
A power liftgate and power operation for one or both sliding
side doors is standard on all but base and LX models.
Performance
Touring and Limited models are the only Town & Country
minivans to offer all-wheel drive (in addition to front-wheel
drive). It gives the minivan exceptional safety and handling
ability, regardless of the surface or weather condition.
The engine under the hood of Touring and Limited models
is a 3.8-liter V6 engine that produces 215 horsepower at
5000 rpm and 245 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm. It is mated
to 4-speed automatic transmission.
Both models come with a tire-pressure monitor for 2004.
Load-leveling height control suspension is standard with
AWD models and the Limited trim.
Safety and Security
Dual front airbags, antilock 4-wheel disc brakes, automatic-off
headlights and the LATCH child seat system are standard.
Front side airbags and fog lights come with the Limited
model.
